Lord, the sun is warm and pleasant on my back. The birds of all sorts are chirping and twittering in the trees around me this morning. Lily, my gracious, canine companion, is lying beside me with her chin on the bottom rail looking out into the backyard, watching everything and nothing in particular, patient and content.
Yet, the busy world of human endeavor continues to whoosh and whir past on Water Street on the other side of the house. A truck of some sort growls and rumbles past on some heavy errand.
Here I sit with pen and notebook, seeking your mind, your heart, your bowels. I want your life to be alive in me. I want your love to love through me. I want your goodness to be good in me. I want your purpose to be my purpose, your vision to be my vision, your power to move into the world through me.
Sometimes, my life feels very strained and scattered, very much at loose ends. Knit me together into one whole, all and thoroughly for you. I am pastor and teacher, husband and father and friend, son, brother, nephew. I am a craftsman in words, materials, images. I am steward of a house and a small portion of land. I am a citizen of a country and a brother in Christ. I am many things, and at base, I am a human being, created and sustained by you, made in your image.
All of this I lay before you, my King and my Lord. All this I surrender in submission to you. Please, Lord, take it and reign over it as my king. I yield myself utterly to you. I renounce the devil and declare that he is a usurper and a thief and most thoroughly unwelcome anywhere in my life.
Instead of Satan and sin, I long to have you weave all the threads of my life — the threads of your choosing only — into a rich tapestry, suitable and pleasing in your sight. Bring your creative order to my scattered chaos.
