Quote of Note #145: Blessing our Enemies

“Repentance and tearing down walls that we’ve built also means that we speak differently of ‘them’. ‘Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you’ (Luke 6:28). To bless means to speak well of. This biblical command can radically change our interactions within our circle of friends. When the topic of ‘the other’ comes up, we have the opportunity to change the discourse. Rather than the toxic communication that often arises when ‘those people’ are discussed, we are challenged to speak well of those who are being demonized.”

John Perkins, One Blood: Parting Words to the Church on Race and Love. Chicago: Moody Publishers, 2018, page 117.
