Quote of Note #134: Leaving the Past Behind

“[God] wants us first to acknowledge our full responsibility, without excuse or extenuation. Then he says in effect: ‘Now put all that behind you; I will take responsibility for it’ (and he can take responsibility for the evil we have done: as we have seen, he has provided in Christ the effective way of dealing with it–the only effective way). ‘I will take responsibility for it,’ he says, ‘and now stop crying over spilled milk. While you fret over the past you will do no good. Start afresh with a clean sheet, and do the work you are given to do.’ That, as I see it, is what justification means.”

C. H. Dodd, Benefits of His Passion. Nashville, TN: Abingdon, n.d., page 43.
