A Litany for a Time of Election
Forgive us for forgetting that the Lion of Judah is a lamb bearing the marks of slaughter.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for seeing other people’s sins while being blind to our own.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for defaming our neighbor for not thinking as we do.
Give us gentle and humble hears like yours.
Forgive us for seeking our own advantage without regard for the disadvantage it places on our neighbor.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for loving the power to coerce rather than the power to bless.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for trusting in or dreading princes and presidents.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for praising the powerful and demeaning the weak.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for walking by on the other side rather than stooping down to bind up the wounded.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for seeking to dominate our neighbors rather than to serve them.
Give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
Forgive us for failing to recognize your image in the face of our enemies.
Come, Holy Spirit. Take away our stony hearts, and give us gentle and humble hearts like yours.
