Bible Note #10 — 1 John 1:5-10 — Light & Darkness, Truth & Deception

1 John 1:5-10

“Light” and “darkness” are paralleled by “truth” and “lying or deception” in this passage.  The truth as a concept here is multi-layered  It is in some places the truth about God.  In other places it is truth about ourselves.

Ironically, we ourselves are often both the deceived and the deceiver at the same time.  In such situations, we position ourselves in the darkness where we will be at risk of still further self-deception and further loss of joy.  Self-deception is a self-perpetuating state of existence (2 Corinthians 4:4).  Escape comes from abandoning the “self” and utterly surrendering to God, who is in Christ the Light of life, the Light of the world (Isaiah 9:1 & 2; John 1:4, 5, & 9; John 3:19-21; John 8:12; 2 Corinthians 4:6).

  1. Yes, Yes Yes – And then there was Light! If we walk with the Word, we are walking into the light, – in the Light. Remain in Him! The light of Christ (the church ) shines in the darkness – sets itself apart from the darkness to make a difference, to bring Light into the world. If we remain in sin, we stay in the darkness. We need to allow ourselves to be transformed and live into the Light and Hope of the Gospel ! \o/

Thank you for the links to the other Scripture references.

  2. “Self-deception is a self-perpetuating state of existence” – Could it continue until the point where the strongholds of darkness lead to spiritual death?

  3. A song from White Heart just came to mind –

    Walking in the light
    Following the Master
    Walking in the light
Let Him shine in your life
For the light keeps burning bright
    It overcomes the night
So hold on, keep on walking

Well the world looks at you
And wonders why you do the things you do
    They wanna confuse you
But you know that you’re right, right on track
You never need to stop and look back
You gotta keep movin’, you just keep on

    Walking in the light
    Following the Master
    Walking in the light
Let Him shine in your life
For the light keeps burning bright
    It overcomes the night
So hold on, keep on walking

You gotta keep walking, don’t give in
The devil’s fighting wars that he can’t win
    Don’t let him fool you
’cause the power of the Lord, is so great
His love is so much stronger than hate
It’s a love that won’t leave you, you just keep on

    Walking in the light
    Following the Master
    Walking in the light
Let Him shine in your life
For the light keeps burning bright
    It overcomes the night
So hold on, keep on walking

  4. I’m ready to walk as a child in the light
I’m ready to walk on a straight and narrow path
I’m ready to walk as a child in the light
Walkin’ in the light of the Lamb

Oh when you’re walkin’ the path of righteousness
    Let Him lead the way
Cuz He will guide you and He will love you
And never let you go astray

And when you can’t see where you’re goin’
And only darkness can be found
Just look toward Him, He’ll shine his light for you
And He will turn your life around

I’m ready to trust with the faith of a child
I’m ready to trust and He’ll take me by the hand
I’m ready to trust with the faith of a child
    Trusting and obeying His commands

And if you’re lookin’ for salvation
The Lord has paved a way
The Lamb has freed you, now let Him lead you
And He’ll show you a brighter day

And when you’re laying your life before Him
And sharing the light He gives
Our world is brighter, our love is stronger
And we know that Our Savior lives

I’m ready to walk as a child in the light
I’m ready to walk on a straight and narrow path
I’m ready to walk as a child in the light
Walkin’ in the light of the Lamb
